I have decided to keep a Journal of how the natural world changes around where I live. Of the things I see that interest me. I may not always know the names of the trees and plants, birds, animals and insects that I will photograph but I will have fun doing it and perhaps I will learn something new about my surroundings.
Just ‘out of my back gate’ is a lane which continues on the other side of the main road. So this is the title of my Journal I know that there will be times when I am not at home and I will still want to include the things I see but it will still be ‘out of my back gate’

A Week in Skipton, Yorkshire
A week spent up in Skipton Yorkshire with my daughter and her family, most of my photo are of my grandson, Daniel, who is now 20 months old, but I did take some of the countryside around the area. Skipton has a wonderful network of canals and a river so lots to take there and the beginning of the moor is within easy walking distance that even Daniel walked quite a lot of it.
see my other blog Mary's Musings for photo of his walking that day.

Catkins
Someone has called the second catkins Holly catkins and yes it is an evergreen and the leaves are a bit like holly leaves, but I can not find any reference to them in my books. I will endeavour to get to the library and see if I can find them in a book there.
I have been to the library and still can find no identification for this plant. I have looked through lots of books but not one of them shows this catkin so for now Holly Catkins are what I will call them until someone somewhere is able to put a true name to them.
I have found it at long last this is a garden plant apparently and is called Garrya elliptica and I found it on this site http://www.thegardener.btinternet.co.uk/diaryjan01.html
